It then passes Nijong Reserve and enters Lambie Street - surely one of the finest domestic streetscapes in rural New South Wales. The Lord Raglan Hotel or Inn at 11 Lambie Street, which dates from 1854 and is the oldest inn in the district, became a bank in 1860 and is now a gallery. At the end of the street is the Royal Hotel and its outbuildings. The hotel was built in 1858 and has a superb cast iron verandah and an attractive hipped roof. Lambie Street has great beauty and grace.

  • Mine Tours - The highlight of any visit to Mount Isa is a comprehensive tour of the mines. It makes most sense to start with a surface tour which includes an excellent film which explains how the mine works and what equipment is used. Mount Isa is one of the few mines where visitors can actually take an underground tour. At the height of the season tours are often booked out two months in advance so plan ahead.

  • Other Ocean Recreational Activities - Including scuba diving, fishing, windsurfing, sailing and wildlife such as sea lions, seals and dolphins.

  • Visiting the Steelworks - Whyalla is still the only steelworks in Australia to hold regular public tours - they are now run by a private company. The tours, which leave the Tourist Centre at 9.30 am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, last for about two hours and cover the entire steel making process from the coke ovens and blast furnace to the rolling mill. The steelworks now specialise in long products - railway lines, rolled steel joists etc. The major period of expansion for the steelworks occurred in the 1960s when two blast furnaces were opened, the coke ovens were commissioned (1968) and an iron ore pelletising plant was constructed.

  • Wildlife Watching - See Little Penguins in their natural habitat at the Little Penguin Observation Centre, located at Parsonage Point, Burnie. Prepare to be surprised.... right next to the bustling Burnie CBD is a colony of little penguins going about their lives right before your eyes. The Observation Centre lets you experience these fascinating birds firsthand, any time of the day or night - for free! Guided tours can be arranged by appointment.

  • Market Train - Visit the Penguin Old School Market by train! The Market Train departs Burnie on the second and fourth Sunday of each month at 9.00am, 12.00 noon and 3.00pm*, and travels from Burnie to Penguin and Ulverstone return. Tickets are available through the reservations hotline (see number below) or from the Burnie Railway Station on the day of travel.

  • Walking Around Poatina - This is an ideal area for walking and it is quite easy to come across the wildlife of the area as the Great Western Tiers abound with Bennetts wallabies, possums, quolls, bandicoots, echidnas and wombats. The local creek has a family of playpus but you'll be lucky to see them. The town also has a pottery and craft gallery.

  • Port Arthur's Historic Prison - Situated on 98 hectares (242 acres) around Mason Cove, discover the historical Penitentiary and the Separate Prison.

  • Swimming at Caroline Pool - Caroline Pool is a popular local swimming spot, which is reminiscent of the gorges along the MacDonnell Ranges in Central Australia. The river comes between two cliffs and forms a deep pool in the gorge.

  • Aboriginal Heritage Tour - Jaburara Heritage Trail - Visitors to the town who are interested in the Aboriginal history of the area should obtain a copy of the Jaburara Heritage Trail booklet (available from the Karratha Community Library or Karratha Tourist Information Centre) which details a 3.5 km walk around the town stopping at Aboriginal carvings, old quarries and shell middens. It is worth recalling that only the Aborigines have lived in this area with any success. The early Europeans left it as quickly as possible and today it is only air-conditioning and swimming pools which make the harshness of the environment bearable.

  • Heritage Trails - 1 - Old Port Hedland Trail - a 2.3-km walk which explores the town as it was before World War I. It includes the old Post Office, Police Station, Court House, churches, hotels and stores. 2 - The Port Trail is a 1.8-km walk concentrating on the wharves, jetties and warehouses which existed in Port Hedland before the arrival of the iron ore industry. 3 - The Sutherland Trail is a 9-km exploration of the old townsite looking at the early pensioner accommodation, the old railway station, the railway goods yard, the Mining Museum Park, the pioneers' and pearlers' cemetery, the old General Store and the Aboriginal Hospital. 4 - And the Out and About Trail, an 85-km exploration of the whole area, includes the popular Pretty Pool, the Old Well, the various creeks that run into the mangrove swamps, South Hedland and Finucane Island.

  • Mount Worth State Park - 15 km to the south is Mount Worth State Park, consisting of 164 hectares of land recovered after logging and grazing ceased. The ruins of old timber mills can still be seen in the vicinity. The mountain itself overlooks the valley to the north and meandering creeks to the south. The park can be approached off the Darnum to Hallston Road. This track leads to the Moonlight Creek picnic area where the Cameron Valley walking track begins its one-hour circuit through the mountain ash forest.

  • Neerim and Lookouts - Visitors to Neerim, to the north of Warragul, may wish to visit the dairy farm where Gippsland blue cheese can be seen in the making and tea can be enjoyed in the tea room. To the north-east is the Baw Baw National Park while Reservoir Hill, off Brandy Creek Road, offers fine views of Warragul and the district. Other scenic spots in the area include the Glen Cromie and Glen Nayook nature reserves and the Tarago reservoir on the Jindiwick Road.

  • Sporting activities - Petanque is played on a regular basis in Halls Gap, pool at the local hotel or at try a pool competition every Wednesday at The Valley Inn and Lodges. There are also a few golf courses within a 50k radius plus mini golf at Grampians Adventure Mini Golf. Also horse riding and cycling.
